Originally from Cardiff, Richard now lives and works in Sheffield. He first came to the region when he attended Sheffield University in 1981 to study Natural Environmental Science. Much of his time was spent studying the ecology of the surrounding countryside and this was really the beginning of Richard’s special bond with the Peak District.

As a result, many of his recent paintings have been influenced by the diverse beauty of the Peak Landscape as well as his native Welsh coastline. He draws inspiration from the unique interaction of sky, land and water producing landscapes and seascapes with their own sense of drama and emotion.

Of his work Richard says ,“I’m intrigued by the transitory aspect of nature, how it can totally change the character of a place from one moment to another. My work thus tries to capture a ‘memory’, exploring the feelings derived from it rather than just the subject matter”.

He works mainly in acrylic, adding texture by applying layer upon layer then scratching back the paint to infuse the work with a sense of energy and movement.

Richard Barrett’s work has been widely published by The Art Group as limited and open edition prints.
